MANGROVE RESTORATION AND COMMUNITY WOODLOTS KENYA

Enhancing mangrove forest protection and management including reforestation for livelihood enhancement and carbon sequestration. The project will plant one million mangroves and restore degraded areas and expanded other areas within the shore line. This will improve fish breeding sites and carbon sequestration. The project will also promote establishment of woodlots on community farms for climate change adaptation and mitigation through local community participation.

TREES FOR MOUNT KENYA SCHOOLS / COMPLETED

Working with schools around the Mount Kenya Forest Reserve, CHASE Africa and Mount Kenya Trust will plant woodlots on school grounds. Schools have up to 10 acres of land, and are motivated to plant trees to provide a sustainable source of firewood and timber. This helps reduce pressure on the indigenous forest which surround Mount Kenya - Africa's second highest mountain. The trees also improve biodiversity and provide shade in the playground when they are growing. Children engage in learning about the importance of trees, and the woodlots also act as demonstration sites to inspire parents to plant trees on their own land. The organisation works with schools who are motivated to care for the trees on their land over the period of growth, which means they have excellent survival rates and can cut costs associated with fencing. They have run successful schools projects since 2016, and hope to expand this work over the coming years to support many more communities.

ABOUT TREEPLAN.ORG

Did you know: Trees are amazing organisms. Every tree captures carbon dioxide and generates oxygen for other people, plants, and animals on earth. Depending on the size and type of tree, a single mature tree can produce enough oxygen for up to 18 people!

Did you know: humanity destroys 18 million acres of forest every year. That’s billions of trees that are being wiped out year-after-year for building materials, paper manufacture, or to make room for cattle grazing or infrastructure development. At Treeplan.org, we want to turn that around. It’s our goal to be part of the solution, ensuring that healthy forests and abundant clean air are available for the coming generations.

Treeplan.org informs and motivates action. We spotlight meaningful reforestation projects from around the world and connect our visitors to initiatives that plant the right trees, in the right places, for lasting impact. Working with trusted partners such as Plant-for-the-Planet, in support of the United Nations Environment Programme, we help turn awareness into concrete action—so everyone can contribute to restoring forests and securing a livable future.
